PRODUCTION FACILITY AND SKYKNIGHT RECORDING STUDIO
The new production facility and recording studios for a confidential tech company were inserted into an existing, historically significant building in Los Angeles.
The main recording studio suite is dedicated to one of the client’s user groups, while several other teams occupy edit bays and production spaces. The main studio was placed inside an existing sound stage, allowing for ample room height and the installation of a Dolby Atmos surround sound system. The spaces feature high levels of soundproofing, but also allow for exposure to daylight when desired. Floating concrete slabs and room-in-room construction throughout are employed for maximum sound and vibration control.
The very generously sized mix and control room is taking advantage of its tall ceiling and features a 9.1.6 Dolby Atmos immersive sound environment. Visually striking elements include cove lighting and most impressively, a starry night ceiling that covers the entire control room area.
The adjacent tracking room and iso booth is visible through a large window and features an even taller ceiling than the control room. In all rooms, fabric-covered walls are visually warmed up by vertical wood slats, calibrating the acoustic performance in each space. Hardwood floors complement the palette throughout the studio areas.
The facility’s mezzanine is used for open office space, conference rooms and a large kitchen and break room. All areas are served by generous common facilities, such as comfortable and casual work areas and coffee and food stations.
The design concept references the industrial background and historic construction of the building and emphasizes the technical nature of its new purpose. Additional aspects hint at the location near the Santa Monica Bay and the proximity of the ocean.
